A little About Us, followed by A little about Construction...

Given Back Bird Houses are entirely handmade by Amen & Maria Fisher. Amen is a lifelong woodworker and poet. Maria is a classically trained commission artist with a Masters degree from the New York Academy of Art in Manhattan. Both are nature lovers with a soft spot for birds.

Together, we start by collecting dead wood and driftwood pieces, as well as different types of mosses, drifted bark and fallen branches.  We hollow out each piece of wood specifically to the dimensions needed to best fit tiny song birds, like our various Nuthatches, Chickadees and Wrens. Based on our research, we have come up with an open nester design that invites such birds as Robins, Finches, and Hummingbirds to take advantage of the camouflage that our shelters provide. We have also developed a line of houses specifically for the three varieties of Bluebirds that have historically heralded spring.

Before the houses are ready, we attach the materials we have collected to attract the birds, and to provide them with supplies for their nest inside. Finally, and most importantly, these little houses are hung in your yard and Given Back to the birds.

While not unbalancing any one ecosystem, we carefully take only what we need to create these bird habitats. We live full time in Florence, Oregon, and  we specifically buy all of our supplies in town, at Copeland Lumber, which is both employed owned and operated. In this way, we also Give Back to our local economy.
